The aim of the Celebrate Melbourne project is to foster unity and respect within the city by showcasing cultural continuity. By integrating cultural elements from Diwali into the celebration of Christmas, it creates a meaningful connection and sense of unity among diverse communities.

Vibrant lights and colorful decorations used during Diwali are repurposed for Christmas festivities, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. Shared messages of peace, joy, and goodwill from Diwali are embraced in Christmas greetings, promoting a harmonious blend of cultural values. A family from India moved to Melbourne a few years ago. During their first Diwali in Melbourne, they were thrilled to see the city light up, much like back home. They noticed how the festive spirit of Diwali, filled with light decorations and joy, seamlessly transitioned into the Christmas season. This made them feel at home and they felt a sense of belonging. They now eagerly participate in both celebrations, recognizing the shared values of unity, joy, and goodwill.
